Reimagining spaces for youth at Family House
Love In Action is a Family of Woodstock initiative, created in partnership with my studio, to refresh the interior spaces of Family House.
Family House is a program of Family of Woodstock, Inc. and serves runaway and homeless youth ages 12–17 in Ulster County.
For nearly 50 years, Family House — Ulster County’s only shelter for teens ages 12–17 — has provided safety, support, and temporary housing during moments of crisis and transition.
Through the Love In Action Project, we’re transforming these spaces into environments that foster healing, dignity, and belonging.
Why This Matters
The spaces we live in shape how we feel, how we think, and how we move through the world.
For teens experiencing homelessness or instability, environment becomes even more important. A room can either reinforce stress and uncertainty — or offer a sense of calm, safety, and possibility.
Family House has been a place of refuge for over three decades. While the care has always been strong, the physical environment has not been updated in over 30 years.
This project is about changing that.
Through thoughtful design, we’re creating spaces that support emotional well-being, encourage self-expression, and remind every young person who enters:
You are seen. You are supported. You belong.
“Every young person who comes through our doors deserves more than shelter — they deserve spaces that help them heal, grow, and feel genuinely supported.”
Robert Molina, Team Leader / Program Director, Family House
“In my 25 years working with young people navigating difficult life circumstances, I have seen how much the environment matters.
When young people walk into a space that feels calm, cared for, and welcoming, it can help them feel safer, more grounded, and more open to support.
This project is one way our community can show youth that they are valued.”
-Robert
“Every child deserves a space that reflects their worth, supports their healing, and reminds them they matter.”
Brooke Lane, brookelane Design Studio
“Love In Action is about creating spaces that remind every young person they are seen, supported, and valued.
At Family House, incredible care is given to the youth who pass through its doors—but the physical space has not been updated in over 30 years. With time, the wear has become visible. This project is about transforming these environments into ones that feel safe, uplifting, and filled with dignity.
Through thoughtful design, we have the opportunity to create spaces that support healing, inspire hope, and reflect the level of care these children truly deserve.
I’m honored to donate my time to this initiative and hopeful we can come together to bring these spaces to life.”
-Brooke
The Vision
💙 A new vision for each space
The Love In Action Project will refresh bedrooms, common areas, and shared spaces through thoughtful design, paint, furnishings, organization, and carefully selected items that support comfort, dignity, and belonging.
Each space is being approached with intention so youth can experience an environment that feels calmer, more welcoming, and more reflective of the care already provided by Family House staff.
Explore the Rooms
💚 See the transformation
Explore each room to view the design vision, what’s needed, and how you can help bring it to life.
The design process has also been informed by youth voice, including reflections and input from residents about how they experience the space and what helps them feel safe, comfortable, and valued.
Each space includes a full cost breakdown — allowing you to directly support meaningful, tangible change.

Community Support
This project is made possible through the generosity of our partners and community.
We are deeply grateful to Benjamin Moore for donating paint and professional labor to transform the common areas — helping us lay the foundation for a brighter, more welcoming environment.
We are also for UlsterCorps for supporting volunteer coordination and Pennrose for helping support the revitalization of the basketball court as part of the broader effort to create welcoming, youth-centered spaces.
Love In Action
Love In Action is more than a project.
It’s a collective effort to create spaces that feel safe, grounding, and full of possibility — for every young person who walks through these doors.

Thank you for thinking of us! While we truly appreciate offers of furniture and décor donations, we are unable to accept most donated furnishings for this project. Due to the limited size of the rooms and storage constraints, we must work within specific dimensions and requirements. We are also striving to create a cohesive, thoughtfully designed environment throughout the entire home.
Interior designer Brooke Lane has generously donated her time to carefully select every item based on durability, functionality, size, safety, and overall design aesthetic. For this reason, monetary donations toward the purchase of needed items are the most helpful way to support the project.
